Data Collection and Analysis Lab: Social Network Analysis
We are pleased to announce Data Collection and Analysis Lab: Social Network Analysis hosted by Methods North-West and the Mitchell Centre for Social Network Analysis.
We invite PGR students from among the four Methods North-West universities to submit their research design, data collection, or data analysis proposals that utilise or aim to utilise social network analysis. This event will take place on Friday, April 21st 2023, at the University of Manchester.
Student participants will:
- Submit their social network analysis related proposals by Monday, April 10th 2023
- Give a presentation of 15 minutes their proposals in person on Friday, April 21st 2023
- Receive feedback (written + comments) from Mitchell Centre experts
- Meet and talk to their peers
The goal is to help the students with coming up with the best possible data collection or data analysis strategy given their research questions.
The participant are also cordially invited for lunch generously provided by Methods North-West. There will also be small refreshments (coffee, tea, biscuits, fruit) available throughout the entire day. The exact time and location of the Lab will be disclosed to participants as date of the event approaches. The deadline for submitting proposals is Monday, April 10th 2023 to tomas.diviak@manchester.ac.uk
MethodsNW workshop: Advancing Knowledge Co-Production and Mobilization Methods in the Pursuit of Health Equity
Monday, October 2nd 2023 @ 12:30pm – 5:00pm
This workshop invites postgraduate students to explore storytelling as a means of co-production in their research. Academic researchers play an essential role in instigating co-production processes and are uniquely positioned to support knowledge mobilization of communities bearing the burden of injustice. Specifically, we will explore community-led storytelling. Storytelling has been recognized as a qualitative methodological strategy that supports communities in narrating their daily experiences of injustices, build group power and advocate for structural change.
Participants will have an opportunity to learn how to facilitate these co-production spaces and identify ways to work that are accountable to communities in the pursuit of health equity. Four placements are available for students that are interested in collaborating on a deeper level–from planning, implementation and follow-up of this space. This is an excellent opportunity to learn how to organize a collaborative space and network with researchers doing work in this area.
We invite Ph.D. students who are at least 6-months full-time into their Ph.D. program (traditional route).

Call for Contributions Methods Northwest Seminar Series 2023-24
Methods Northwest Seminar Series
MethodsNW convene a highly popular series of short online postgraduate Methods Sessions on methodological innovations in the social sciences. The series started during the Covid-19 pandemic but has since evolved to become a platform for researchers across the partner universities (and beyond) to discuss innovations in the use of research methods in the social sciences in general. The series now attracts participants from the UK beyond the north west as well as a growing global reach. Apart from PGRs and other researchers, the series also attracts non-academic audiences (civil servants, civil society, private sector). Contributions are welcome on new innovative methods, new ways of using existing methods or revisiting some of the traditional social science methods.
Call for Session Presenters 2023/24 Academic Year
During the academic year 2023-24 MethodsNW welcomes contributions or offers of a seminar on social science methods including (but not exclusively) qualitative, quantitative, digital/computational, investigative, creative/arts and interdisciplinary methods, mixed methods, adapting methods to the challenges of research after COVID-19 and sessions on writing methods for publication. Methods sessions with a thematic focus (for example sustainability, inequality, gender, decolonisation etc) are also welcome. We encourage sessions dealing with novel or new methodological developments in all of the NWSSDTP’s disciplinary areas.
We realise that potential presenters remain time constrained and have designed the sessions in ways which minimise the work those presenting have to do in advance. The sessions run on Thursday afternoons from 2pm-3pm and can be presentations with a traditional Q&A or have a more conversational or interactive character. In the past contributors have asked those attending to read or watch something in advance. All sessions will be promoted by the NWSSDTP and the methods initiatives in the partner
Universities as well as by MethodsNW and other external bodies where relevant.
